Another step in understanding the biology of tree ferns under in vitro culture conditions using liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry in our laboratory<\/p>\n

As is well known, ferns, especially tree ferns, which in the wild are the source of various components of the diet of the indigenous peoples of the areas where they occur, are an ideal object for conducting research on their metabolism using chemical analysis. Cell suspensions derived from these species, allow experiments with the never-ending possibility of using analogous experimental material in various laboratories around the world, not necessarily located in the southern hemisphere.<\/p>\n The purpose of the study was to determine the profile of primary and secondary metabolites found in the liquid medium, an environment in which single cells or aggregates of cells live. Cells of the cell suspension of Cyathea delgadii, a tree fern, similarly to other cultured cell suspensions of tree ferns in our laboratory are characterized by the production of organic substances released into the aquatic environment. Of the 130 specific substances, the most notable are flavonoids, which impart a yellow color to the cultured tissue as well as to the medium in which they live. The following classes of metabolites were found: alcohols, amines, amino acids, fatty acids, nucleic acid components, organic acids, phenols, phosphates, sugars, sugar alcohols and others.
