We are pleased to announce that the Publishing House of the Agricultural University in Cracow has published a monograph entitled. \"Pieniny - Nature and Man, vol. 17\", entirely devoted to the unique pine tree from Sokolica. This specimen is for many a symbol of the Pieniny. The monograph covers various aspects related to the biology and functioning of this unusual tree.<\/p>\n

During the study of a detached branch of a relic pine tree, the staff of the Plant Anatomy Laboratory conducted anatomical analysis of the acquired wood fragments. Both transverse and tangential tissue sections were analyzed. It was found that the acquired cross sections contained annual increments deposited between 1881-2018 (cross section of ~5.8 cm); 1871-2018 (cross section of ~6.0 cm) and 1900-2018 (cross section of ~4.9 cm). The material noted the presence of multiple narrow rings of annual growth, fading rings, light rings, and fluctuations in wood density (within annual growth). The presence of anomalous wood structure was noted, including a disruption of the course of the radial rows of cells, which is most likely related to the powerful volcanic eruption of 1912 (the eruption of Novarupta volcano in Alaska).<\/p>\n

The authors of the chapter treating wood anatomy deduced that the specific features of the wood structure of the relict individual, such as the noted change in the slope of the cells within the broken branch, represent an adaptation to growth in the unfavorable microhabitat conditions on the summit of Sokolica. The structure of the wood produced was also influenced by factors affecting the vascular cambium during the different years of life of the studied organism.<\/p>\n
